Brandy Johnson, assistant professor of law, SIU Simmons Law School, recently participated in a virtual discussion “How Disabled People Vote (It’s Not Always Easy),” hosted by the League of Women Voters of Naperville.

John Shaw, director, Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, will write a series of monthly essays about statesmanship for the Chicago Tribune, starting in September. The series, “Searching for Statesmanship,” will focus on statesmanship on the global stage as well as in smaller venues that often escape notice, according to the newspaper.

SIU System President Dan Mahony is joining the board of directors at Intersect Illinois, the state's economic development organization focused on bringing new jobs and investment to the state. 

John Reid Perkins-Buzo, associate professor, radio, television and digital media in the School of Media Arts, recently received an international animation film grant from the Galway Animation Center to continue his work on “Raven,” an animated film that combines hand-drawn frames with AI-generated background animations, as well as volumetric video — moving images from the real world that can be viewed later at any angle — using a volumetric camera of his own design.  

Julia Rendleman, assistant professor of journalism in the School of Journalism and Advertising, is involved in with an Illinois Innovation Network grant-funded project to preserve Cairo’s history and legacy. Rendleman and a faculty member at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, received funding for their project “Unveiling Black History: The African American Heritage Trail in Cairo, Illinois.” Community partners on the grant are the Cairo Public Library and the Cairo Historical Preservation Project. 

John Shaw, director, Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, has been selected to participate in the 2024-2025 Council on Foreign Relations’ Higher Education Ambassador Program. The nine-month program “connects educators across the country with barrier-free resources, professional development activities, and a vibrant network of like-minded professionals who are committed to equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and perspective to navigate today’s connected world.” The program will expand the institute’s contacts across the country and world.

Seung-Hee Lee, professor, fashion studies, in the School of Architecture, earned the Best Paper Award for “Comparing Consumer and AI Perceptions of Fashion Counterfeit Purchasing Behavior” at the 2024 Society of Open Innovation: Technology, Market, and Complexity International Conference in Riga Technical University in Latvia in July.
