“Grigori V. Aleksandrov—Great Directors,” a journal article by Tony Williams, professor, English, was published in “Senses of Cinema” this month. Williams’ contribution states Aleksandrov, a former associate of Russian film director and screenwriter Sergei Eisenstein, has suffered neglect due to his work in 1930s and ’40s Soviet musicals. Although marketed as ideological mass entertainment, Aleksandrov kept faith with the developments in 1920s Soviet avant-garde, such as FEKS, and wove them into his narratives in such a way as to avoid charges of formalism that blighted the careers of many of his 1920s colleagues.
