Jose Leme, assistant professor of cannabis biology and cultivation systems, College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences, presented his research addressing the biochemical and physiological effects of plant biostimulants on cannabinoid production at the Illinois Department of Agriculture’s Illinois Hemp Summit 2023 on March 15 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.
Dong Han, associate professor, School of Journalism and Advertising, is part of a 23-member task force led by Illinois State Sen. Steve Stadelman to study the decline of local journalism in Illinois, propose public policy to strengthen local journalism and recommend ways to revive the industry. The task force held its first virtual meeting on March 27 with plans to hold public meetings elsewhere in the state. The task force will send a report to the legislature and Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
Yuhosua “Joshua” Ryoo, assistant professor, School of Journalism and Advertising in the College of Arts and Media, received the Mary Alice Shaver Promising Professor Award at the 2023 American Academy of Advertising (AAA) conference, held in Denver, Colorado, March 23-26. The award “honors a junior faculty member who has demonstrated excellence and innovation in advertising teaching and research.” The AAA is the most prestigious academic organization in the field of advertising and publishes several top-tier academic journals, including the Journal of Advertising.
Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker recently appointed Kevin Clark, director of development for Library Affairs, the graduate school and Center for International Education, to the state’s 11-member Clean Energy Jobs and Justice Fund board. The fund helps raise money and other capital for renewable energy projects, particularly minority-owned businesses and those serving underrepresented populations. The nomination requires Illinois Senate approval.
Brent Pease, assistant professor, School of Agricultural Sciences, will present “Nature Is All Around Us You Just Have to Listen,” at 7 p.m. Friday, March 24, in the meeting room at the Carbondale Township Hall, 217 E. Main St., Carbondale. He will discuss several ongoing research projects focused on changes in biodiversity and bird communities across Southern Illinois.
Allison Joseph, professor and director of the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing, discussed the emotional power of poetry and grief during a March 11 segment of The SPIEL, a locally produced and nationally syndicated news magazine show. Joseph’s segment starts at the 6:25 mark.
Rick Smith, professor, School of Art and Design, is the featured demonstrator at “Fire on the Mountain” during the 16th annual Toe River Arts Blacksmith Exhibition in Spruce Pine, North Carolina. Hosted by Penland School of Crafts, Spruce Pine Main Street and Toe River Arts Council, Smith will give a lecture at 7 p.m. April 28. SIU students and alumni are also participating in the associated exhibition.
Gregory Wendt, video producer and instructional technology specialist for the Center for Teaching Excellence, recently won a national contest sponsored by Apple’s Final Cut Pro (FCP). Wendt utilizes the company’s software in his video editing work for the university and last fall attended the company’s Global Summit in Chicago for professional development. He later joined contestants from all over the country in submitting a 15- to 60-second video entry in the 15 Seconds Film Festival FCP Tour 2022. Wendt’s winning video is available for viewing. He plans to use his prize, a 360-degree camera, to assist faculty and staff who want to incorporate this innovative tool into their courses.

Advised by Sajedul Talukder, assistant professor in the School of Computing and the director of the Security and Privacy Enhanced Machine Learning (SUPREME) Laboratory at SIU, the CyberSalukis placed 16th overall during the U.S. Department of Energy’s CyberForce Competition.
Allison Joseph, professor and director of the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing, gave a lecture and read her poetry as part of Marshall University’s A.E. Stringer Visiting Writers Series on Feb. 28, helping celebrate the university’s Black History Month.
Julie Partridge, professor in sport and exercise psychology in the School of Human Sciences, is speaking Friday, March 3, at the 15th annual Johns Hopkins Medicine VTE Symposium on the psychological impact of thrombosis (a blood clotting condition) on athletes and exercisers. She will also be on a panel discussing patient perspectives on care and recovery. March is Blood Clot Awareness Month. Approximately 900,000 Americans are diagnosed with blood clots each year, and more than 100,000 die — more than from AIDS, breast cancer and car accidents combined.
Camille Davidson, dean, SIU School of Law, was recently profiled for being one of the state’s four Black law school deans featured in the blog post “Meet the Black women leading Illinois law schools” in 2civility.org by the Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism. The blog was written by executive director Erica Harold and DEI manager Julia Roundtree Livingston.
