Kevin Mercer, assistant professor, School of Media Arts, recently participated in a group exhibition, “Rite of Spring Break” with his work, “Telos,” an experimental interactive narrative. The curated exhibition was at the Evans School in Denver, Colorado. The free, playable software can be played here.

Judy Huyck, a senior lecturer in fashion design, recently received the “Finest Construction” Award from Threads magazine for transforming a basic men’s suit “to create a sharp, gender-expansive outfit with an asymmetrical shape.” Huyck’s work has been featured multiple times in the magazine. The annual design challenge Salvage and Selvage is sponsored by the magazine for Association of Sewing and Design Professionals members.

Mark Wagner, director, Center for Archaeological Investigations, will give a virtual presentation, “Written in Stone — Exploring Native American Rock Art of Illinois,” at 7 p.m. today, April 21, as part of the McCracken County Public Library’s Evenings Upstairs series. Wagner will present an overview of the types of rock studies conducted in Illinois over the past 100 years and the types of images that have been discovered in the state as a result. The presentation will be available on the library’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

“Flight,” an interactive shadow puppetry installation by Lavinia Roberts, a teaching assistant in the School of Theater and Dance, is on view at Artspace 304 through Friday, April 22, in the Neil and Mary Ellen Dillard Media and Performance Gallery. A reception is from 5 to 7 p.m., April 22, at 304 W. Walnut St., Carbondale. Inspired by several poems by Emily Dickinson, the works thematically explore solitude, nature and beauty. Roberts, a visual artist, writer and educator, will earn an MFA in playwriting from SIU Carbondale next month.

Camille Davidson, dean, SIU School of Law, has been appointed to the Illinois Supreme Court e-Business Policy Advisory Board. Her term expires Dec. 31, 2025. The board provides recommendations, advice and guidance to the Supreme Court and Administrative Office regarding implementation of e-business applications and data exchanges in the Illinois circuit courts.

Linda Baker, university professor, Paul Simon Public Policy Institute, moderated a panel discussion March 28 during the virtual 2022 Women’s Government Day. The conference, sponsored annually by the institute, brings women who are interested in government to the state capitol in Springfield and features elected state officials and professionals offering insight into women in leadership, public service and civic engagement.

Matthew Young, assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the SIU School of Medicine in Carbondale, recently co-authored a paper titled “Identification of Somatic Mitochondrial DNA Mutations, Heteroplasmy, and Increased Levels of Catenanes in Tumor Specimens Obtained from Three Endometrial Cancer Patients” in the journal Life. Young and Dr. Laurent Brard, professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, led a team of SIU researchers, including Buck Hales, professor of physiology in the SIU School of Medicine, and Carolyn Young, researcher the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, both on the Carbondale campus, and other researchers from the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield.

“Sometimes I Dream in Farsi,” a documentary feature by Pirooz Kalayeh, assistant professor, School of Media Arts, will screen at several different venues this month in-person and virtually for those who would still like to stream the film. From April 19-22, the film will play the Regal E-Walk in Times Square as an official selection of the Katra Film Series and virtually on the XerbTV platform. From April 22-25, the film will be presented virtually as part of the Transcultural Dialogues program through the African Diaspora International Film Festival and Columbia University Teachers College. From May 4-6, San Francisco State University’s Center for Iranian Diaspora Studies will screen the film and do a moderated Q&A, between Taghi Amjadi, a counselor at SFSU, and Kalayeh to help students discuss racial trauma and provide healing for children and adults.
