The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi — the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines — recently recognized SIU Carbondale’s Phi Kappa Phi chapter as a Circle of Excellence Silver Chapter. The award is given to chapters that exceed expectations in chapter operations and who demonstrate sustainability and vitality as a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi. The Circle of Excellence program was introduced in 2018. The program recognized 74 chapters this year, including 28 with the Silver distinction.

A photographic and film installation by Heather M. O’Brien, assistant professor, School of Media Arts, is part of an exhibition “Revolution Everywhere: Thresholds of Resistance” on view through Dec. 11 at the University of California, Irvine’s University Art Gallery. The gallery also recently hosted a book launch for O'Brien’s “like the delayed rays of a star.”

Jay Needham and Robert Spahr, professors, School of Media Arts, will be presenting a performance “Objects, Perception and Time: The Present Moment Amplifier and the Coming of Auto-Generative Synthetic Sound” at the XXIV GENERATIVE ART International Conference GA2021, Dec. 15-17 in Sardinia, Italy. Spahr will also be presenting a paper and recent generative art, “Defending Uncertainty: The Creative Process and Generative Art” at the conference.

Brianna Janssen Sánchez, assistant professor of practice and coordinator of teacher education programs, College of Liberal Arts, is nominated to participate in the 2022 Dr. W. Robert Houston Leadership Academy. The invitation is a two-year commitment to attend the Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) annual conference and participate in the academy in 2022 and 2023. The academy’s purpose is to continue to broaden the perspectives of leadership for emerging leaders in education and teacher education within its membership.

Three contemporary works by Cody Brookshire, assistant professor in the School of Media Arts and the School of Music, have been accepted to be included at the 21st Century Guitar at Ball State University, March 17-20, 2022. The international festival “brings together academics, composers and performers from different fields who are interested in contemporary approaches to guitar research, sound production, composition, performance and pedagogy.”

Katherine Elson, an academic adviser in the College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences, recently received the Outstanding Academic Advisor, Primary Role award for the 2021-2022 academic year from the Illinois Academic Advising Association.

John Reid Perkins-Buzo, associate professor, School of Media Arts, recently published two entries, “Oculus Rift and Other Devices” and “DVD and Blu-ray Disc Games” in the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Video Games: The Culture, Technology and Art of Gaming. The edition is considered the “definitive, go-to resource for the diverse and expanding video game industry.”

Kimberly Berger, assistant lecturer, American Sign Language, Languages, Cultures and International Studies, was recently appointed to the Illinois Interpreter Licensure Board by the Illinois Deaf and Hard of Hearing Commission. She is one of seven sign language interpreters on the licensure board. Her term expires in December 2022.
