William Freivogel, School of Journalism, earned the 2016 Silver Gavel Award for Other Media from the American Bar Association for his series of online St. Louis Public Radio news stories, “Law, Justice and the Death of Michael Brown.” The series examined events in the aftermath of the August 2014 shooting in Ferguson, Mo. Freivogel will be honored with other award winners at the National Press Club, July 12, in Washington, D.C.

A presentation by Valerie Brooks Wallin, School of Art and Design. “Best Practices in Advising Art & Design Students,” was chosen to be included at the fifth annual Illinois Academic Advising Conference, Friday, May 20, at Illinois State University.

H.D. Motyl, Radio, Television, and Digital Media, presented “Nudes Descending a Staircase #2,” his short experimental video tribute to Marcel Duchamp’s seminal painting, during an international experimental film and video art exhibition, April 22, at the Surplus/Lack Exhibition at The Lab Gallery in San Francisco, Calif.

Heewon Yang, chair, Health Education and Recreation, and two graduate students in the therapeutic recreation program, Jamie Elam and Tanzania Adams, presented “The Use of Leisure Resources in the Transition Care Programs” to 30 clients in the Southern Illinois Transition Care Program in Dongola in March.

Brad Palmer, producer, and Benjy Jeffords, digital media production specialist, WSIU Public Radio, received Illinois Associated Press awards at the Illinois News Broadcasters Association convention in Springfield on April 23. Palmer won second place in the “Best Sports Feature” category for his story on new Illinois High School Association rules regarding football and concussions. The story is available here. Jeffords, won second place in the “Best Videography” (TV) and “Best Hard News Feature” (radio) for his story on storm shelters built in Southern Illinois. The story is available here.

Mary Louise Cashel, Psychology and director of clinical training, received a National Institute of Justice grant as part of the Comprehensive School Safety Initiative. Cashel is principal investigator and her team is partnering with the Regional Office of Education #30, which supports communities in Alexander, Jackson, Perry, Pulaski and Union counties.

Daryl Kroner, Criminology and Criminal Justice, was chosen by the Illinois Department of Corrections to lead a review the effectiveness of all offender recidivism reduction programs in the state. 

Vicki Carstens, Linguistics, was featured in an April 22 “The LINGUIST List” blog

Holly Hurlburt, History, is the recipient of a Paul Oskar Kristeller Grant to support the project, “Cem Sultan and the Politics of Fifteenth-Century Venice.” 

Trent Ford, Geography and Environmental Resources, received a grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for research on North American heat wave predictability. 

Sylvia Secchi, Geography and Environmental Resources, who works on issues related to the interface between agriculture, energy and the environment, recently received grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Argonne National Laboratory/Department of Energy.
