Possible updates to faculty, staff email clients will begin March 10

As a part of the university’s ongoing effort to combat cybercrime, the Office of Information Technology is reminding faculty and staff that they will be required to use one of the supported and trusted ways to access SIU email.

OIT is implementing  this “best practice” as recommended by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The change is being driven by Microsoft (MS), which will require use of trusted email clients later this year. Efforts to move toward enforcing the requirement will start March 10 with implementation running through the end of the month.

As noted earlier, the effort focuses on ensuring that everyone in the SIU community uses a trusted and supported email client (the mechanism that you use to access email). Those who continue to use older or incompatible email clients will not be able to access MS systems and tools after the transition.

SIU’s trusted email clients include:

  • Outlook 2016 or newer.
  • siu.edu.
  • Outlook on any mobile device.
  • Apple Mail on iOS devices.

Faculty and staff who now use a current version of Outlook 2016 or newer, such as Outlook 365 on their work or personal device need do nothing. OIT recommends that those not using one of the trusted email clients mentioned above should make the change now. Anyone relying on an older or incompatible email client after that date will be unable to access MS systems and tools.
