Day of Giving: 2,600+ Salukis donate over $3.1M

The eighth annual SIU Day of Giving on Feb. 28 showed Saluki spirit for 24 straight hours. The SIU Foundation raised over $3.1 million and more than 2,600 donors participated. About $17 million has been donated during the Days of Giving.


SIU seeks 400+ volunteers to assist with eclipse events

Efforts to prepare for the plethora of events for the April 8 total solar eclipse at SIU Carbondale are well underway, and officials are issuing a call for volunteers, a vital part of the Southern Illinois Crossroads Eclipse Festival. Students, staff and community members who would like to sign up for a volunteer shift should visit the Eclipse Volunteer page and follow the information and links to the individual sign-up pages.


Lt. Gov. Stratton to speak to 600+ FFA members at women’s ag conference

Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton will speak about 8:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, in the Student Center ballrooms as part of Women Changing the Face of Ag Conference. Organizers expect some 600 young women from Illinois FFA high school chapters, along with industry supporters, for breakout sessions and a full day of activities.


Journey to the Eclipse talk to focus on NASA mission to the sun

Nour Rawafi, an astrophysicist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory and lead project scientist of NASA’s Parker Solar Probe mission, will speak at 3 p.m. Friday, March 1, in Morris Library's John C. Guyon Auditorium. The free, public event is the second-to-last Journey to the Eclipse talk planned at SIU prior to the April 8 total solar eclipse.


SIU community can participate in sustainability-focused workshops, activities 

SIU Carbondale’s Sustainability Office is collaborating with the Student Sustainable Farms to offer a series of free workshops for students, faculty and staff. Each workshop is open to the first 30 people to register. The first workshop is today (Feb. 29) from 4:30-6:30 p.m.


Spice up your Saluki spirit with maroon

Jennie Snyder, a researcher in the School of Forestry and Horticulture, shows the perfect Saluki spirit. With its fans as the X-factor, the Saluki men’s basketball team closes out the regular season against University of Northern Iowa on Senior Day at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 3, at Banterra Center, where every available seat is $10. The SIU women’s basketball team hosts Illinois State at 6 p.m. today (Feb. 29) and closes out the home schedule with Bradley on Senior Day at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 2, at Banterra Center. The Saluki men’s team hosts the 2024 Mid-America Conference Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Student Recreation Center’s Shea Natatorium, March 6-9. SIU Aviation, Able Flight partner on flight training

The School of Aviation is partnering with Able Flight on a joint training project beginning in May, during which five Able Flight Scholarship recipients stay on campus and receive intensive flight training from SIU Aviation instructors.


Former SIU President Poshard to discuss book 

Former SIU System President and U.S. Congressman Glenn Poshard, along with co-author Carl Walworth will discuss their book, “Son of Illinois: Glenn Poshard’s Life in Politics and Education,” at 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium.


SIU hosts high school press association event for students 

SIU hosted 230 high school students from 12 schools on Feb. 28 during the 73rd annual Southern Illinois School Press Association Winter Conference hosted by the School of Journalism and Advertising at the Student Center.


Reminder: Nomination deadline for SIU System ADEI award is March 15   

The nomination deadline for the Dr. Wesley G. Robinson-McNeese ADEI Lifetime Achievement Award is March 15.  


Reminder: Distinguished student service award nominations due March 18

Faculty and staff are encouraged to nominate a deserving student for an SIU Student Distinguished Service Award from the SIU Board of Trustees. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. March 18. 


Conversation on student success is available

The Feb. 26 Conversation of Understanding virtual discussion where students throughout the SIU System share their insights into how student success plays a pivotal role in the educational landscape is available for viewing.
