SIU School of Law celebrates large, diverse first-year class as it marks 50 years

As the SIU School of Law enters its second half-century, it celebrates a sizeable, diverse class of first-year students, and its mission of serving the public good established with the first class in 1973 remains critical.


Trustees honor Inventor of the Year, Faculty Collaboration Award winners

During its meeting on Thursday, the SIU Board of Trustees honored outstanding faculty. Spyros Tragoudas, professor and director of the SIU Carbondale School of Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering, received the Inventor of the Year Award. The inaugural SIU System Faculty Collaboration Award was presented to Koushik Sinha, associate professor, School of Computing at SIU Carbondale, and John Matta, associate professor and department chair, Department of Computer Science at SIU Edwardsville, for their collaborative project, “Estimating the Burden of HIV in Semi-Urban and Rural Illinois.” Read the full story.

Last week's announcement that Rupert Murdoch, who built Fox News into a “powerful force in American political life” will step aside later this year as chairman of Fox Corp. and News Corp. comes as the media empire remains strong, say SIU media and political experts.


Faculty, staff invited to join LGBTQ+ Faculty & Staff Council

The LGBTQ+ Faculty & Staff Council (QFSC) is inviting interested faculty and staff to join this constituency organization to provide support, advance the interests, recognize the historical context and promote the welfare of LGBTQ+ civil service, administrative/professional and faculty at SIU Carbondale. Reminder: Celebrate our success on Thursday

The university’s recent successes, which include an enrollment increase for the first time in nearly a decade, will be celebrated with a campus appreciation cookout from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, in Old Main Mall in front of Shryock Auditorium.


Start Seeing Pink events raises breast cancer awareness, scholarship funds

The university is recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October while also raising scholarship funds for SIU students affected by the disease. Recreational Sports and Services is sponsoring several special events in conjunction with SIU’s Start Seeing Pink Saluki Strength initiative. The efforts also include the Saluki Strength Breast Cancer Fund and the Start Seeing Pink merchandise store, which is accepting orders until Oct. 6.


Sign up now for Sept. 29 Friday Night Lights SIU students vs. supporters game

Friday Night Lights – a Family Weekend event featuring a friendly softball game with SIU students competing against parents and community members – is set for 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at Charlotte West Stadium, 253 E. Park St., Carbondale, and everyone is welcome as a participant or spectator.


Reminder: SIU Carbondale accepting honorary degree/service award nominations

The university is now accepting nominations for honorary degrees and distinguished service awards that will be presented at May 2024 commencement ceremonies. The nomination deadline is Oct 18.
