Professor James Franklin Sharp donates $1M to SIU, honored with museum naming 

With a $1 million gift, Professor James Franklin Sharp has chiseled his name into Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s legacy. Now, the university will honor his generosity by renaming the University Museum as Sharp Museum. Today (Sept. 21), the SIU Board of Trustees voted for the museum to bear Sharp’s name and to rename the Southern Illinois Gallery as the Mrs. Rosanna Sharp Myers Southern Illinois Gallery, after Sharp’s sister. 


Research team uses low-tech sun funnel to capture unique eclipse image

A faculty-student team of researchers led by Bob Baer, specialist, and Cori Brevik, assistant professor of practice, both in School of Physics and Applied Physics, and Harvey Henson, director of the STEM Education Center, utilized a common household item with a telescope to capture a unique image of a total solar eclipse in Western Australia in April.


Higher education summit focusing on diversity, equity is Oct. 19-20

A two-day Illinois Higher Education Equity Symposium in Collinsville, Illinois, on Oct. 19-20 will focus on understanding the challenges that underrepresented groups in higher education face and implementing strategies for change. Sponsored by the Southern Illinois University System, the symposium will feature legal experts, education scholars and legislators.


Mandatory cybersecurity training begins Monday

The university’s cybersecurity training for faculty and staff will be available, starting on Monday, Sept. 25.  The mandatory training is for all SIU Carbondale faculty and staff, extra help and volunteers; SIU President’s Office and all SIU System Office staff members. Employees with the SIU School of Medicine in both Carbondale and Springfield are exempt from this training; they have a separate cybersecurity training course to complete. The deadline is Oct. 20.


Secretary of state to offer services on campus

Faculty, staff and students will have two chances over the next few weeks to utilize a number of services offered by Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias’ office. 


SIU Technology and Innovation Expo in St. Louis to showcase research and enterprise

The SIU Technology and Innovation Expo on Oct. 5 will showcase technologies and research by faculty from SIU’s Carbondale, Edwardsville and School of Medicine campuses, and bring some of the university’s top researchers together with business leaders and entrepreneurs.


Virtual appointments available for faculty, staff regalia sale on Oct. 5 

University Events and Outreach is announcing a virtual faculty and staff regalia sale through Herff Jones, a national provider of custom regalia. Graduate students wishing to purchase regalia rather than rent are also welcome.


Showing Saluki Spirit is great, including maroon on Friday 

There’s nothing better than showing Saluki spirit, like Stacy Peach, an assistant manager in employment services in Human Resources. Continuing with its fall schedule, the women’s softball team hosts John A. Logan College in a doubleheader starting at noon Saturday, Sept. 23, at Charlotte West Stadium. The unbeaten and No. 12/13-ranked Saluki football team has the week off before a Family Weekend matchup Sept. 30 at Saluki Stadium against Missouri State.
