SIU prof researches if VR can reduce opioid overdose deaths

SIU faculty member Wasantha Jayawardene and fellow researchers are examining if a virtual reality-based training tool may offer the key to saving lives of opioid users.


SIU to celebrate Diversity Week with guest speakers, events and more beginning Aug. 28

“Celebrating Carbondale’s Diverse Communities” is the theme of the university’s 2023 Diversity Week Celebration, set for Aug. 28 through Sept. 1.


Technology help is available  

The Office of Information Technology wants to remind faculty, staff and students they can receive help with technology tools and services from SalukiTech, the campus’ single source for technology assistance and telecommunication needs.


SIU Day at the Du Quoin State Fair is Sept. 2

SIU will be heavily involved as the 101st edition of the Du Quoin State Fair will be awash in maroon, starting with the annual Twilight Parade at 6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 25. Chancellor Austin A. Lane, along with the Marching Salukis, Saluki Spirit Squads, members of the Dawg Pound and WSIU will all be participating.


Grant will help SIU School of Law clinic expand civil law services to veterans, their families

A recent Illinois Bar Foundation (IBF) grant will allow Southern Illinois University School of Law’s Civil Practice Clinic to expand its basic estate planning and other civil law services to veterans and their immediate families.

SIU’s Paul Simon Institute to host Carbondale mayor on Aug. 28

Carolin Harvey, a veteran on the Carbondale City Council who became the city’s first Black mayor earlier this year, will discuss her vision for the community with John Shaw, director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute. Admission for the 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 28, event in Student Center Ballroom B is free and open to the public, but registration is recommended.


Small businesses can sign up now for no-cost marketing workshop

The Illinois Small Business Development Center is offering Marketing Unleashed, creative strategies for small businesses on Monday, Aug. 28. Register for the free event online by Friday, Aug. 25.
