Gretchen Dabbs, professor, biological anthropology, and colleagues recently published in the International Journal of Paleopathology the discovery of a rare ovarian tumor nestled in the pelvis of a woman who died more than 3,000 years ago during excavation of an ancient Egyptian cemetery. Reports are the tumor is the oldest known example of a teratoma, a rare type of growth that typically occurs in ovaries or testicles.
