Julia Rendleman, assistant professor, Charlotte Thompson Suhler School of Journalism and Advertising, is one of eight photographers interviewed for “In the Moment: 40 Years of Reuters Photojournalism.”  In the piece, she discusses her June 5, 2020, Reuters photograph of two young Black ballerinas against the backdrop of the statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia. Her photograph and video are located near the bottom of the page. 

Jan Thompson, director, Charlotte Thompson Suhler School of Journalism and Advertising, recently returned from a visit to the San Quentin Rehabilitation Center in California and the 2025 American Penal Press Contest, which celebrates the work of incarcerated writers. The national awards competition relaunched in 2025 with SIU Carbondale and the Pollen Initiative as sponsors. Sixty professional journalists from across the country judged 21 prison publications and nearly 200 submissions. SIU launched the competition in 1965, and it continued until 1990, becoming known as the “Pulitzer of prison journalism.” 

Selected works from a photography series “B(e)-Sides” by Sean Hoisington, admissions and records representative, are on view until Sept. 30 at Booby’s Bar and Sandwich, 406 S. Illinois Ave., Carbondale. The complete series has been exhibited at the St. Louis Artists’ Guild and Marian University in Indianapolis. 

A series on federal farm policy and Mississippi River flooding by Molly Parker-Stephens and Julia Rendleman, assistant professors in the School of Journalism and Advertising, Lylee Gibbs, a senior in journalism, and the Saluki Local Reporting Lab “The Federal Farm Policy Trap: Why Some Farmers Are Stuck Raising Crops That No Longer Thrive” and “The Floods Kept Coming. He Needed to Grow a Crop That Would Thrive in Water — or to Quit”were in Capitol News Illinois and Pro Publica on Sept. 4-5.

“Dwelling,” a collection of poems by Allison Joseph, professor and director of the Master of Fine Arts program in creative writing, was recently published by Red Hen Press. She will be doing several readings over the next few months including Oct. 4 at Poets House in New York City, Nov. 6 at the Poetry Foundation in Chicago and Nov. 20 in Carbondale at the Crab Orchard Literary Festival.
