A new study co-authored by Gregory Whitledge, professor, zoology, and the U.S. Geological Survey, looks at an established population of black carp in parts of the Mississippi River basin. Media reports about the study appeared in several outlets, including the Tate Record in Senatobia, Mississippi, and The Center Square. 

Jennifer Smith, professor of Spanish, School of Languages and Linguistics, was recently interviewed for the Iberian Series of the New Books Network about her recent 2021 monograph “Women, Mysticism, and Hysteria in Fin-de-Siècle Spain.” 

Kenneth Stikkers, professor, philosophy and Africana studies, recently delivered an invited talk, “On the Uses and Abuses of Philosophical Anthropology,” at the annual meeting of Associazione Pragma, the Italian philosophical society for the study of American pragmatism, at Roma Tre University in Rome. His most recent publication is “Max Scheler’s Two Approaches to Philosophy of Culture,” which appeared in a chapter of Philosophy of Culture as Theory, Method, and Way of Life.  

David J. Gibson, professor, School of Biological Sciences, was appointed by Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker to the Endangered Species Protection Board. The appointment is effective through May 15, 2024. The board’s mission is “to protect those species of plants and animals native to Illinois which are in danger of being lost from the wild in Illinois.” 

Lahiru Jayakody, assistant professor, microbiology, School of Biological Sciences, was recently recognized by the Illinois Science & Technology Coalition among the 2022 “Researchers to Know” at Illinois universities. An emphasis was also placed on researchers who have recently achieved milestones, such as publishing an influential paper, receiving national recognition or commercializing a new innovation. Jayakody received a statewide Innovator of the Year Award earlier this year for his research in food and agriculture.
