University Communications and Marketing earned the following awards in the annual Educational Advertising Awards competition: Gold – “Experience SIU” radio spot; Silver, single magazine advertisement; Bronze – “Experience SIU” television spot; Bronze, special video, “Experience SIU”; and merit, digital advertisement. There were more than 2,250 entries in the international competition. In a separate competition, SIU also earned merit awards for its admissions and eclipse websites.
Barbara Bickel, School of Art and Design and director of the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, is participating in two visiting artist workshops and providing an art exhibition at Alexandria University in Egypt. The exhibition, “Recitation: The Art of Barbara Bickel-A Multimedia Installation” is Feb. 22 through March 7 at the Freedom Centre for Creativity.
Véronique Maisier, Languages, Cultures, and International Trade, was recently interviewed by Jamaican writer Alecia McKenzie for Maisier’s research on violence in Caribbean literature, and discussed her book, “Violence in Caribbean Literature: Stories of Stones and Blood.”
Seung-Hee Lee, School of Architecture, has two papers accepted for presentation at the MBAA International Conference, sponsored by the Marketing Management Association, March 22-24, in Chicago.
Yoginder Chugh, Mining and Mineral Resources Engineering, presented the 27th Institute Series Lecture at the Indian Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University on Jan. 30. He presented an interactive three-part lecture “How Do We Incorporate Creativity into Undergraduate Curriculum?”
Joan Davis, Dental Hygiene, is the recipient of the 2017 ADEA (American Dental Education Association)/ADEAGies Foundation Education Fellowship. Each year, ADEA and the ADEAGies Foundation provide the opportunity for a dental educator to become familiar with a broad range of timely issues facing dental education through a unique learning experience.
Shannon S. McDonald, School of Architecture, is co-author of a paper titled “Energy-Efficient Commercial Complex in Kathmandu, Nepal: Integrating Energy Simulations into the Design Process.” The paper should also appear in the “Journal of Architectural Engineering” in the future.
Qian Huang, School of Architecture, has a paper titled "A Compact and Versatile Wireless Sensor Prototype for Affordable Intelligent Sensing and Monitoring in Smart Buildings" accepted for presentation at the 2017 International Workshop on Computing in Civil Engineering, hosted by the University of Washington, June 25-27.
Nancy Martin, Information Systems Technologies, has been accepted to attend the National Library of Medicine Georgia Biomedical Informatics course, April 2-8. The week-long, all-expenses paid course, is hosted by Augusta University’s Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library in nearby Young Harris, Ga. The course familiarizes individuals in applying computer technologies and information science with biomedicine and health science.
Allison Joseph, English, is the recipient of the inaugural New Georgia Arts Award, presented by the New Georgia Arts Collaborative, a coalition of writers, educators and patrons sponsoring cultural events and community outreach in greater Atlanta. The prize honors a writer who exhibits exceptional talent as a published writer as well as showing meaningful social commitment in a public capacity.
