Jennifer Smith, Languages, Cultures, and International Trade, recently had her co-edited volume, “Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Nation in Fin-de-siècle Spanish Literature and Culture” published by Routledge. The essays in this anthology deal with how these categories interacted in the formation of the Spanish and Spanish colonial subject at a time of Spain’s imperial demise.

Work by Travis Janssen, School of Art and Design, is included in the 2016 Screenprint Biennial, an international juried exhibition at Collar Works Gallery in Troy, N.Y. The exhibition runs through Dec. 23. Janssen was also a panelist for a coinciding symposium on screenprinting that occurred in late October.

Jeb Asirvatham, Agribusiness Economics, has been asked to serve on the editorial board of the Amity Journal of Agribusiness. The journal is managed by Amity Directorate of Management and Allied Areas, a research unit of Amity University, a not-for-profit private university in India. 

Shannon Sanders McDonald, School of Architecture, will present a live webinar sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Intelligent Transportation Systems’ Joint Program Office at noon, Thursday, Nov. 17. The webinar, “Solar-Powered Automated Transit Networks: The Future of Sustainable Urban Transportation,” will present the concept of utilizing solar-powered automated transit networks, or ATN, in dense urban areas. McDonald will be one of four presenters.

Daniel Overturf, Cinema and Photography, and local writer Gary Marx will open “Watercourse,” an exhibit of photographic prints and text, Saturday, Nov. 12, at Artspace 304, 304 W. Walnut, St., Carbondale. An opening reception is from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday. The exhibit features work Overturf and Marx created during their exploration of Illinois rivers. Some of the exhibit pieces, which cover work from 1993 to 2016, were part of their 2008 book, “A River Runs Through Illinois.” The exhibit runs through Dec. 2.  Carbondale Community Arts (CCA) gallery at Artspace 304 is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, by appointment, and during all CCA public events.

Jeb Asirvatham and Wanki Moon, Agribusiness Economics, presented “A Dual-Self Theory of Dietary Behavior and Health Outcomes” Oct. 28 at the Missouri Valley Economics Association in St. Louis.  Using evidence from neuroscience and psychology in dietary choices, the study explicitly models diet-related self-control problems and looks at how people choose the level of food to consume considering the importance of health, pleasure of eating, and the health effects of food and diet restraint costs. A key result of the study is that combo meals and buffet-type meals lead to overeating.

Rolando Gonzalez-Torres, School of Architecture, has a paper titled “Human Territoriality: An Expected Bond for Subsistence” accepted for presentation at the Seventh International Conference on The Constructed Environment, in Krakow, Poland, May 25-26.
