H.D. Motyl, Radio, Television, and Digital Media, has been elected conference vice president of the University Film and Video Association, an organization for educators in media production. During his three-year term, he will plan and manage the organization’s annual international conference. For the past two years, Motyl served as conference co-chair for screenings – which involved coordinating, scheduling and exhibition of almost 200 films.

Leslie A. Duram, Geography and Environmental Resources, is the recipient of the Donald Q. Innis Award from the Association of American Geographers (AAG). The AAG is a professional organization for geography with more than 12,000 members. The award is for “excellence in food and agricultural geography research.” There will be special panel session in honor of Duram, organized at AAG’s 2017 national meeting, April 5-9, in Boston.

Sosanya Jones, assistant professor, qualitative research methods and higher education, Educational Administration and Higher Education, has been chosen as the Illinois Education Research Council (IERC) 2016-17 faculty research fellow. Jones will receive funding for her study “Incentivizing Diversity: Perceptions of the Implementation and Impact of Illinois’ Performance Funding Diversity Indicator.” Jones has more than 15 years of experience in higher education administration, teaching and research. Much of her work focuses on studying international, national and institutional policy and practice and its impact on access, retention and inclusion of historically underrepresented students of color.

Mike Robertson, Aviation Management and Flight, is the 2016 John K. Lauber Safety Award recipient from the University Aviation Association. The annual award is presented for an achievement in aviation safety. 

Seung-Hee Lee, Fashion Design and Merchandising, received the “best paper” award at a recent Society of Open Innovation: Technology, Market and Complexity (SOItmC) & Consortium of Supply Chain & Operations Management (CSCOM) conference. The paper, “Perception of Time, Creative attitudes, and adoption of innovations: Comparing Chinese and U.S. College students,” was coauthored by Jane E. Workman. professor emeritus, and Kwangho Jung. 

Rebecca Atkinson, Animal Science, Food and Nutrition, received a grant from the Illinois Equine Industry Research and Promotion Board for an “Evaluation of Efficacy of Curcumin on Bacteria in the Gastrointestinal Tract of Riding Horses.”

Jason Bond, Plant, Soil, and Agricultural Systems, received a $89,925 grant from BASF Corporation to conduct industrial trials on plant disease research.

Mark Wagner and Ryan Campbell, Center for Archaeological Investigations, received two new grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S. Forest Service for cultural resources investigations in the Tell City Barrens Project Area and the Tell City Openings Project Area in the Hoosier National Forest, Indiana. Wagner also received a grant from the Illinois Department of Military Affairs to conduct a ground penetrating radar (GPR) survey of the East St. Louis Armory.

Michael L. Grey, Radiologic Sciences, was elected a Fellow of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists. Fewer than 200 people have achieved this designation in the organization that has 153,000 members. He is also co-author of a book, “Imaging for the Health Care Practitioner,” published in July, by McGraw-Hill Education.

Rae Goldsmith, University Communications and Marketing, served as conference chair and presenter at the Council for Advancement and Support of Education's Summer Institute for Communications and Marketing held August 1-5, 2016, in Boston.
