SIU Carbondale releases new ‘We Are Southern’ spotlight video

Southern Illinois University Carbondale released its newest institutional spotlight video to the public today (Nov. 5), showcasing the university's vibrant campus, academic excellence, student experiences and the Saluki spirit that makes Southern unique.

Titled “We Are Southern,” the video highlights SIU's nationally recognized research, hands-on learning opportunities, campus life and the surrounding Carbondale community. Through powerful visuals and storytelling, it captures the university's commitment to helping students pursue their ambitions and shape their futures, bringing to life a central message: “We don't chase the spotlight; we become the light.”

The 2-minute, 49-second full cinematic experience will also be adapted into shorter 15- and 30-second commercials for marketing and media platforms to reach prospective students and broader audiences.

The video premiered Oct. 28 during the sixth annual Chicago Saluki Takeover Tour Chancellor's Reception at the Palmer House, where attendees received an exclusive first look. Chancellor Austin A. Lane announced that shorter versions will air during televised sporting events, including ESPN broadcasts, introducing SIU to audiences nationwide.

The project began in January when the university invited creative agencies with Saluki alumni connections to submit proposals. Chicago-based Jordan, Ross and Rose Advertising Inc. was selected to write, direct and produce the video.

Greg Steinbrecher, a 1990 SIU radio and television graduate and creative director at the agency, drew inspiration from his experiences in the university's marching band and his lasting connection to Southern.

“When I sat down to work on this incredible opportunity, I didn't need to search for a story to tell,” Steinbrecher said. “I drew upon the ones that I've lived and witnessed.”

“We were not surprised in the slightest that Saluki alumni from the College of Arts and Media would be able to deliver a high-impact video to promote the university,” said Jeff Harmon, chief marketing and communications officer. “We love it.”

The production brought together creative talent from across the university and Carbondale community, capturing the people, places and experiences that define Southern.

“This project reflects the Saluki spirit, bringing together our university and community with a shared vision,” said Jaclyn Durcholz, co-producer of the video and senior marketing associate in the Office of the Chancellor. “The final result captures the beauty of our campus, the energy of our students and the opportunities that make Southern special. While we could never capture everything SIU has to offer in just a few minutes, this video offers a powerful glimpse into what makes Southern a place where possibilities come to life.”
