SIU’s Buffalo Tro is back Nov. 20 at Touch of Nature
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Buffalo Tro returns to Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center Nov. 20, inviting the community to gather around the fire for an evening of food, drinks and storytelling.
Doors and the bar open at 5 p.m. at Freeberg Hall at Camp II, 1206 Touch of Nature Road in Makanda. The program begins at 6 p.m., and dinner is served at 7:15 p.m. Maroon signs guide guests to Camp II.
Outdoor education pioneer L.B. Sharp brought the tradition to Touch of Nature out of a deep belief in community, shared experiences and the lessons people learn around a campfire. Cooking steaks over hot coals — paired with storytelling and reflection — grew into a ritual that helped participants build identity and a sense of belonging.
Brian Croft, Touch of Nature director, said the event still centers on what happens when people gather outdoors.
“The Buffalo Tro brings people together around a fire to honor L.B. Sharp’s legacy and to celebrate what outdoor experiences do for people,” Croft said.
Beyond its history, the evening looks back on a year of work at Touch of Nature — recognizing the people and programs behind it while keeping an eye on the center’s future.
The signature meal features a steak cooked over hot, stacked hardwood coals, served with a baked potato, salad, rolls and dessert. Local beer and wine are available for purchase.
Because the program takes place outdoors, guests should dress accordingly.
