Former Gander Mayor Claude Elliott to Share 9/11 memories at SIU Carbondale
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Former Gander, Newfoundland, Mayor Claude Elliott will share his firsthand memories of Sept. 11, 2001, and the extraordinary generosity shown by his community during a free public event at noon Thursday, Oct. 22, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Tedrick Welcome Center.
The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute and SIU’s School of Theater and Dance will host Elliott for a special edition of the John and Muriel Hayward Lecture Series. His presentation, “Lend a Hand, Do What You Can: Remembering the Generosity of Gander on 9/11,” will recount how residents of the small Canadian town welcomed nearly 7,000 airline passengers whose flights were diverted following the terrorist attacks.
“Claude Elliott’s story reminds us what is possible when people put compassion and service ahead of themselves,” said Linda R. Baker, institute interim director. “In a moment of tremendous uncertainty, the people of Gander responded with extraordinary generosity. Their example continues to demonstrate the power of community, civic responsibility and simple acts of kindness.”
As mayor, Elliott was at the center of Gander’s response as residents opened their homes, schools and community spaces to thousands of unexpected guests. His presentation will offer a personal perspective on the people, decisions and acts of kindness behind a story that captured the attention of the world.
The presentation is free and open to the public. Registration is not required, but attendees are encouraged to register in advance to help organizers ensure there are enough boxed lunches for everyone.
The event also provides an opportunity to hear the real-life story that inspired SIU’s upcoming production of “Come From Away,” the acclaimed Broadway musical about the stranded passengers and the people of Gander. Performances are Saturday through Sunday, Oct. 22-25, in SIU’s Shryock Auditorium. Online tickets for those shows are available and can also be purchased by phone at 618-453-5741 or in person at the venue the night of the performance.
More information, a list of the institute’s upcoming events and past speakers and events are available.
