SIU Press hosts virtual criminology writing panel today

SIU Press is hosting a virtual writing panel today (July 30) that focuses on criminology and features two former police officers to provide insight on the criminal justice system and criminology.

The free “Writing Criminology” panel is at 5 p.m. today and will be available via Zoom. The workshop is part of SIU Press’ 70th anniversary celebration.

The two panelists are:

  • Paul F. Joyce, an assistant professor and chair of the criminal justice and criminology department at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. Joyce was a police officer for more than 31years, including 28 years with the Boston Police Department, policing street gangs and developing strategies to address youth gang violence.
  • Rasul T. Freelain, a coordinator and teacher with the Illinois Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). Sgt. Freelain is retired after 20 years with the Oak Park, Illinois, Police Department. He is certified by CIT International as a coordinator and is working to bring increased awareness to child-to-parent violence and abuse.
