SIU String Orchestra to perform April 27 in Shryock Auditorium

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Music will present the SIU String Orchestra in concert at 7 p.m. Monday, April 27, in Shryock Auditorium. The performance is free and open to the public.

Under the direction of Rossana Cauti, assistant professor of practice in the SIU School of Music and music director of the SIU String Orchestras, the program will showcase a wide repertoire for string ensemble, spanning the Baroque period through the 20th century.

The concert will feature 40 students, in addition to orchestra soloists, “highlighting the artistry and accomplishments of SIU student musicians,” Cauti said.

The concert opens with Antonio Vivaldi’s “Winter” from The Four Seasons, which Cauti said is a “a vivid and programmatic work that captures the intensity and imagery of the season through virtuosic writing and striking contrasts.” The program continues with Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Symphony in E minor, Wq. 177, a work representative of the sensitive style of 18th century German musical movement characterized by its expressive depth, sudden contrasts, and dynamic nuance.

Cauti said the second half of the program features Paul Hindemith’s “Trauermusik,” a deeply introspective work written in 1936, notable for its solemn character and expressive clarity. The concert concludes with Edward Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro, Op. 47, a cornerstone of the string orchestra repertoire that combines lyrical elegance with brilliant contrapuntal writing and virtuosic ensemble interplay.

The SIU String Orchestras are “part of the School of Music’s commitment to providing high-level ensemble experiences for students while engaging the community through live performance,” Cauti said.
