SIU Faculty Senate food drive starts Wednesday
The SIU Faculty Senate is partnering with the Saluki Food Pantry to collect non-perishable food items to help SIU Carbondale students facing food insecurity during the summer months.
The “Feed the Pack” food drive begins Wednesday, April 1, and runs through May 1. Non-perishable items may be dropped off during regular office hours from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday in the Public Health Office in Pulliam Hall, rooms 312-307, or the Student Center Administrative Office, which is located on the second floor. Monetary online donations to the Saluki Food Pantry are also welcome.
“We wanted to help students, as well as students with children who will be out of school during the summer months and unable to participate in school breakfast and lunch meal programs,” said Jennifer S. Sherry, a dental hygiene professor in the School of Health Sciences and Senate Faculty vice president.
For more information on the food drive, email Sherry at clnteth@siu.edu or Jenna Jamieson, instructor and public health undergraduate program director at jamieson@siu.edu.
The Saluki Food Pantry has served thousands of students since it opened in the fall of 2016 in response to research studies and polls that indicated as many as one-third of college students were “food insecure” in that they were unable to obtain an adequate amount of food and sufficient nutrition at any given time.
Students visiting the Saluki Food Pantry receive enough food at no cost so that each family member residing in their household can eat for about three days.
