SIU will recognize March as Women’s History Month with a variety of events
CARBONDALE, Ill. — “Leading with Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future” is the theme for this year’s Women’s History Month as Southern Illinois University Carbondale celebrates the achievements of women and looks to the future.
A wide variety of special events are slated throughout the month. Most are free and open to the public.
“Women’s History Month 2026 is dedicated to uplifting, encouraging and inspiring women to lead with confidence and courage, while intentionally creating a sustainable pathway forward for the next generation of leaders,” said Renada Greer, executive director of the Student Multicultural Resource Center. “It’s a time to celebrate and to reflect on the past, present and future accomplishments and achievements of women through guest speakers, luncheons, research circles, movies and many other events. We’ve seen women rise to some of the highest offices in the land, and we want to inspire the next generation to do likewise.”
Saluki women achieve worldwide
One of the highlights of the month is Saluki Women Speak luncheon on Friday, March 6, in celebration of International Women’s Day. The event is from noon to 1:30 p.m. in rooms 150/160 of the Student Services Building, will feature a panel discussion exploring the achievements of international women in higher education, as well as the challenges they face. The panelists will share their personal experiences.
The event will culminate with an awards ceremony to recognize international women who advocate for and support other women in their academic pursuits and professional journeys. The luncheon is free, but pre-registration is required no later than Thursday, March 5. Sign up online.
Movies that matter
The SIU Women’s Film Festival, hosted by the Paulette Curkin Pride Resource Center, is set for March 16-17 in Morris Library’s John C. Guyon Auditorium. The festival, free and open to the public, features films created by and about women. The films highlight diverse voices and lived experiences, while celebrating creativity, culture and community. Details about the exact schedule are coming soon.
Then, you won’t want to miss “Reel Women, Real Stories” featuring a special screening of “The Six Triple Eight” at 6 p.m. March 27 at the Student Center Auditorium. This film reveals the story of the historic 6888 Central Postal Directory Battalion, dubbed the Six Triple Eight,
This remarkable group of women, the largest group of Black service women to serve overseas during World War II, shattered racial and gender barriers, playing a vital role in bolstering troop morale as they ensured millions of pieces of mail reached American soldiers stationed abroad. Don’t miss this inspiring story of courage, leadership and perseverance illustrating the dedication and resilience these women displayed while leaving enduring marks on military and women’s history.
Women’s impactful research
Wrapping up the month will be “Women in Research, a scholarly showcase for the work of SIU graduate and undergraduate students.
Participants can present their research, scholarly projects and academic interests in a supportive, engaging environment. All academic disciplines are welcome to participate in the event fostering learning, meaningful dialogue and engagement that supports students and brings a deeper understanding of the diverse issues that impact women. Students must their submit poster presentations — focused on research related to women and girls, including issues relevant to their challenges, achievements, and lived experiences — no later than 4:30 p.m. March 20. The showcase is set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 30 in the Student Services Building.

Numerous other events are scheduled in March as well, including the 2026 Illinois ACE Women’s Network Conference from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, March 2, at the Student Center. The theme is “The Power Within” Reclaim, Restore and Rise.” Joyce Ester, seventh president of Governors State University, is the keynote speaker. The event will feature numerous sessions with national and state higher education experts and leaders. Costs vary and online registration is available.
The Sister Circles, an initiative hosted monthly by the women of the Black Staff and Faculty Council, will meet again at 3:30 p.m. March 4 in rooms 150/160 of the Student Services Building. This unique program empowers, supports and guides Black women and Black college students through academic, personal and professional development by providing mentorship, leadership development, community and support as well as assistance with career and economic development. The Paul Simon Public Policy Institute’s annual Women in Leadership, Public Service and Civic Engagement Day is March 25 in Springfield at the Illinois State Capitol and Illinois State Library. The annual initiative spotlights the contribution of women legislators and leaders in the public sector to foster women’s leadership development and involvement in public service.
