Show your support for Special Olympics at Feb. 28 Polar Plunge
In recognition of SIU’s vital role in the founding of the Special Olympics, Special Olympics Illinois chose SIU and Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center as the kickoff site for its 2026 year-long 50th anniversary celebration. Now, officials are calling on the SIU community to show its support of this organization during the Feb. 28 Polar Plunge.
The event raises essential funds for Special Olympics Illinois – Region K, the state’s largest region which serves hundreds of athletes and families across Southern Illinois.
This year’s SIU Polar Plunge is set for 1 p.m. on Feb. 28 at Campus Lake. There’s still time to sign up online to participate or to donate. Registration will also be open at 11 a.m. that day. Participants are invited to dress creatively--awards are given for unique attire, but no wetsuits are allowed. There will also be awards for most money raised by a team, by an individual and for “Special Olympics Spirit.” All plungers will get a free lunch; others can purchase the meal.
“We’re asking everyone to show their Saluki Spirit in support of Special Olympics,” said Brian Croft, executive director of Touch of Nature. “We encourage individuals and campus units to challenge one another to raise funds for this worthy organization that does so much for so many.”
