New Student Concern page provides new tools to help support student success

Faculty and staff now have additional tools to support student success through early intervention and timely assistance with the launch of the new Student Concern webpage.

The page allows campus (faculty, staff and students) to submit a concern so SIU professionals can follow up with students and connect them with appropriate interventions and support — whether for personal well-being or academic success — while respecting student privacy.

Faculty and staff can submit a SAFE report, Saluki Cares referral or an Academic Early Alert. Only one form needs to be completed. If the concern overlaps multiple areas, , it will be routed to the appropriate team for coordinated follow-up.

While concerns can be submitted at any point in the semester, Shelly Gehrke, associate provost for student success, emphasized the importance of early outreach so students receive the support they need with the greatest opportunity to recover and be successful. When students struggle, either academically, emotionally or personally, there are often early indicators before they ask for help.

“The Student Concerns webpage is part of the university’s commitment to our students’ success,” she said. “Our goal is to address concerns as early as possible, when challenges are most manageable. We encourage anyone who suspects a student may be wrestling with an issue to complete a form to bring it to our attention. The sooner we can provide assistance to students, the better.”

The new Student Concern webpage and Academic Early Alert form, complement undergraduate academic progress reports for students at risk of not being successful. Launched in the fall 2025 semester, progress reports are sent in the fourth, eighth and 12th weeks of class. The progress reports and Academic Early Alerts are routed to academic advisors and, in some cases, recruitment and retention coordinators to monitor and follow up. Students also receive timely communication when an Academic Early Alert or progress report is submitted.
