Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program to visit campus Jan. 15-16

Representatives of the Illinois Chiefs of Police Association will hold an on-site assessment of SIU's Department of Public Safety on Jan. 15-16 as part of the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP). Trained assessors from peer agencies across the state will conduct inspections and review files and audits of the police department.

Benjamin Newman, director of DPS and chief of police, and the accreditation team invite the public to voice their opinions and experiences and provide other information with the accreditation team from noon to 1 p.m. Jan. 16. Students, faculty and staff may call 618-453-3771 and ask to speak privately with the on-site team from ILEAP.

DPS was first accredited by ILEAP in 2017. This assessment serves as a re-accreditation of its Tier 2 status, which comprises 179 professional standards in training, operations, administration and personnel.

After the on-site visit is completed, the assessment team develops an on-site report and meets with the ILEAP Council, which will vote to determine if SIU has met the requirements for accreditation.

In December, DPS earned four-year accreditation from a second organization, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).
