SIU Carbondale police earn law enforcement accreditation
The Southern Illinois University Carbondale Department of Public Safety (DPS) recently earned accreditation from the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA).
The four-year accreditation shows DPS’ “compliance with national best-practice standards that denote the best practices in the profession,” according to IACLEA officials. Fewer than 100 agencies have earned this recognition.
“Accreditation from IACLEA affirms that DPS is dedicated to meeting the highest standards of modern policing,” said Benjamin Newman, director of DPS and chief of police. “Accreditation standards outline strong, proven policies and procedures, and agency personnel operate with the highest level of service accountability.”
Accreditation is a voluntary process. An IACLEA assessment team visited campus in August and examined all aspects of the department’s policy and procedures, management, operations and support services. DPS will submit annual reports to show continued compliance with IACLEA standards.
This is the second accreditation for the department, which is already accredited with the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program.
