SIU’s International Guitar Festival features classical guitarist Marcos Vinicius
CARBONDALE, Ill. — The 10th edition of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Music International Guitar Festival on Saturday, Nov. 1, will feature internationally acclaimed Brazilian classical guitarist Marcos Vinicius.
Vinicius will be present a recital that takes the audience through the classical guitar repertoire in Brazil, Argentina and Spain. The 7 p.m. performance will feature his own compositions and guest participation by Isaac Lausell, associate professor of music and director of jazz studies.
The concert is in the Old Baptist Foundation Recital Hall, 980 Faner Drive on the SIU campus. Tickets are $10 apiece for the public and free to SIU Carbondale faculty, staff and students.
Vinicius is a prestigious guitarist, instructor and composer now based in Rome, Lausell said.
His international performances include venues in Europe, Asia and the United States. In his home country of Brazil, Vinicius is a frequent guest at festivals and seminars. He founded and directed Violão América, Brazil’s first guitar-focused magazine, and established the Belo Horizonte Guitar Ensemble.
The festival is sponsored by a SIU Foundation grant and the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society.
