City of Carbondale, SIU to hold Veterans Day ceremony
To honor SIU and Southern Illinois veterans who served their country in the U.S. armed forces, the City of Carbondale and Southern Illinois University Carbondale will recognize Veterans Day on Nov. 11 at the flagpole at South Normal Avenue and West Grand Avenue on the SIU campus.
The 11 a.m. ceremony will include a proclamation from Carbondale Mayor Carolin Harvey; remarks by Tom Harness, a veteran and SIU alumnus; and the laying of a wreath with playing of taps by the SIU Trumpet Studio under the leadership of Ricky Spears, assistant professor of practice in the School of Music.
If the federal government is fully open, SIU Air Force and Army ROTC cadets will participate in a vigil at the flagpole from 6 a.m. until noon, with change of guards every 15 minutes.
