SIU to host fun, hands-on STEM careers conference for grades 5-9
CARBONDALE, Ill. – Girls and boys in grades 5-9 can have fun exploring careers in science, technology, engineering, math and more during the annual Expanding Your Horizons conference at Southern Illinois University Carbondale on Saturday, Nov. 1.
EYH will run from 9:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SIU Student Center and other areas on campus. Students will have the opportunity to participate in workshops offering hands-on activities such as making and testing packages to protect eggs from a high drop, “piloting” a flight simulator, viewing microbes through a microscope and more.
Workshops will include such topics as aviation, geology, chemistry, psychology, mathematics, engineering and technology, and medicine. A complete list for the 2025 conference will be posted on the EYH website closer to the event.
Because professionals will donate their time to lead workshops providing positive experiences with math and science, participants will interact with role models who are active in math- and science-related careers.
Organizers hope many participants attend the event, along with teachers and parents from throughout Southern Illinois.
Registration is now open. The cost, which includes lunch, is $10 if students register by Oct. 17, $17 after that date. Registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Oct. 28. For more information, visit the EYH website, email eyhmath@siu.edu or call 618-453-5302.
