SIU School of Journalism and Advertising students shine a ‘Night Light’ on region’s events

CARBONDALE, Ill. — Students in the SIU Carbondale School of Journalism and Advertising recently launched “Night Light,” a digital-first entertainment publication for what’s happening across the region.

Developed over the summer, the publication “is designed to spotlight the region’s vibrant entertainment scene. From local music and art shows to community festivals and weekend events, it will feature curated coverage of activities and culture relevant to both students and residents,” said Amy Dion, business and advertising sales manager in the School of Journalism and Advertising.

Branding and website design was created by Alexis Moore, a junior majoring in art and design who is also Saluki Adlab creative director. Students with Saluki AdLab, along with a mix of students, faculty and other collaborators will contribute content.

Faculty, staff, students and the public can sign up to receive the weekly newsletter. In addition to the website, Night Light information will be available on Facebook and Instagram.

“Southern Illinois lacks a centralized hub for promoting local culture, events and small businesses — especially those with limited resources to market themselves effectively,” Dion said. “Even with social media, the overflow of content and constant noise makes it difficult to discover what’s really happening. Many events aren’t easily searchable unless you already know where to look.

“The Night Light platform helps fill that need. It offers a space for our community to share information, support small business visibility and promote regional tourism. At the same time, it gives students valuable real-world experience in media, marketing and storytelling. This initiative helps build stronger connections between the university and the region through shared culture and entertainment.”
