SIU to host Juneteenth event on July 1
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale will host a special campus and community event on July 1 in recognition of Juneteenth.
“Who’s Who at Southern Illinois University: Past, Present and Future” is set for 5 p.m. at the Old Main Room in the Student Center. Students, faculty, staff and community members are invited to attend the Black Resource Center event, which will include a meal.
Organizers say the event will be a time to share the history of the people and activities that have played vital roles in the growth and success of the university and community as well as a time to envision the future. There is no cost, but participants must RSVP in advance by June 27. Sign up online.
“The observance of Juneteenth is about the journey and achievement of African Americans from the period of enslavement to freedom,” said Renada Greer, executive director of the Student Multicultural Resource Center and TRiO Student Support Services. “It is a story of overcoming the greatest obstacles with pride, resilience and determination. In celebrating Juneteenth, we recognize the plight and progress of African Americans. At SIU, we are commemorating in a way that instills in the next generation deep respect and honor for the sacrifices made to secure the freedoms, opportunities of education, cultural richness and social benefits we enjoy all today.”
The Black Resource Center is hosting the event, and the Dr. Seymour Bryson Future Scholars Program will be featured. Officials note that the City of Carbondale and various community organizations have numerous events planned in recognition of Juneteenth, so SIU is planning its event a bit later.
No Juneteenth buses
Officials have also announced that the Saluki Express Mass Transit and the Saluki Night Shuttle will not be in service on June 19. JAX Mass Transit will provide Paratransit services on that day.
