Enjoy adventure, fun and more at Touch of Nature’s first Friends and Family Camp

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — A unique, memory-making opportunity awaits at Friends and Family Camp May 2-4, brought to you by Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Touch of Nature Outdoor Education Center.

This all-inclusive weekend is filled with fun, relaxation and activities galore at the scenic site adjacent to the Shawnee National Forest. People of all ages are welcome, but children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Space is limited, so visitors will want to sign up now to reserve a spot.

Inspired by the eclipse

As thousands of visitors flocked to the region for the April 8, 2024, total solar eclipse, many chose Touch of Nature, a lovely spot for families and friends to enjoy the activities and amenities while watching the celestial show. Countless visitors spoke of how much they liked their stay and expressed the desire to return.

“We realized that Touch of Nature offers the perfect place, whether you’re wanting to gather to reconnect with loved ones or friends, enjoy a variety of outdoor activities and adventures, or just appreciate a weekend without the stress of planning,” said Brian Croft, director of Touch of Nature.  Touch of Nature staff brainstormed and created this unique camp that’s designed to appeal to an eclectic array of visitors. A full slate of fun activities will be offered at scheduled times throughout the weekend. Visitors can enjoy as many – or as few – as they choose at no extra cost, with lodging and all meals covered in the pricing as well.

What’s happening

Organizers said activities will run the gamut, from high adventure, including the giant swing, to arts and crafts. Participants can explore the beautiful camp and hike its trails, enjoy live music, join in evening campfire programs and so much more.

Check-in begins at 3 p.m. May 2 and continues until 7 p.m. that evening. Checkout is at 11 a.m. May 4. Guests may leave the facility if they want to visit elsewhere in the region during their stay, but organizers say there will be plenty to keep them busy on site, as well as ample space to kick back and relax while the kids run, discover and have a great time.

“We know traveling with kids or getting friends together can provide its own challenges, so we’ve been really intentional in designing this camp as a bite-sized weekend adventure – something simple and accessible for people with or without kids, enjoyable across all generations,” said Katrina Medernach, community events and retreats program coordinator.

She said singles are welcome, too. Pets are permitted at Touch of Nature as well, as long as they are leashed and remain outdoors. Only service animals are permitted indoors, but there are a variety of pet boarding options in the nearby area.

All for one price

The cost is $125 per person for age 13 and older and $80 for children age 5-12. Kids age 4 and younger can participate for free.
