Saluki Remembrance Day ceremony is April 16
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Southern Illinois University Carbondale will remember 10 faculty, staff and students who have passed away during the 2024-2025 academic year with a ceremony at 1 p.m. April 16, in the Student Center Ballrooms.
The inaugural ceremony will provide a time for reflection, remembrance and connection with the families and friends of those the university community has lost.
Chancellor Austin A. Lane said Saluki Remembrance Day is a way to support families and friends who experienced a loss.
“The loss of one Saluki is a loss for our entire community,” he said. “Saluki Remembrance Day will be a time to pause and reflect. We mourn with the grieving families and friends, and we hope this event can provide a measure of comfort as the memories of their loved ones live on.”
The ceremony will include brief remarks by Lane and Sheryl Tucker, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, a poem written by Allison Joseph, a professor in English and read by Jessica Hardges, a senior in faculty design, the reading of names of the five students and five staff members who have passed, the presentation of a memorial item to family members present and a moment of silence. The School of Music’s Southern Brass quintet will perform as people arrive for the ceremony and later play SIU Carbondale’s “Alma Mater.”
Counselors from SIU’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will be available to assist, if needed.
