SIU Carbondale community invited to celebrate R1 designation
SIU Carbondale next month will host a celebration of its recent designation as a Research 1 university.
The event is set for noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 10, at the Student Center International Lounge and Student Center Auditorium. It will feature a special R1-themed cookie giveaway, faculty research presentations and tabling information for both undergraduates and by the graduate school.
In February, the American Council on Education and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching reclassified SIU Carbondale as Research 1: Very High Spending and Doctorate Production, the same league as elite private and flagship universities across the country.
Faculty presentations for the event include:
Noon-12:15 p.m.: Jim Garvey, director of the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences, “Invasive Carp Movement Behavior, Habitat Use, and Population Dynamics in the Wabash River.”
12:15-12:30 p.m.: Iraklis Anagnostopoulos, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, “Towards Greener AI Computing: Designing and Managing Sustainable Heterogeneous Edge Data Centers.”
12:30-12:45 p.m.: Jia Liu, associate professor of civil engineering, “ERASE-PFAS: Exploring Efficient Pilot-Scale Treatment of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances and Comingled Chlorinated Solvents in Groundwater Using Magnetic Nanomaterials”.
12:45-1 p.m.: Buffy Ellsworth, associate professor of physiology, SIU School of Medicine, “Discovery Pipeline for Genetic Defects in Hypothalamic-pituitary Development Using International Mouse Phenotyping Consortium Mice.”
1-1:15 p.m.: Judith Davie, associate professor, SIU School of Medicine, “Characterization of the Regulation and Gene Targets of TBX2 in Rhabdomyosarcoma.”
1:15-1:30 p.m.: Senetta Bancroft, associate professor, School of Chemical and Biomolecular Sciences, “Developing a Measure of Diverse Student Perceptions and Valuation of Flipped Instruction in Chemistry.”
1:30-1:45 p.m.: Lahiru Jayakody, assistant professor of microbiology, “Development of Novel Biocatalyst for Consolidated Bioprocessing of Plastic.”
1:45-2 p.m.: Chao Lu, associate professor, electrical and computer engineering, “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Climate-Smart Soybean Farming in Sustainable Agriculture.”
The celebration will run alongside the Creative Activities and Research Presentations, which celebrate research, scholarly and creative activities of SIU undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines. Students who worked under the guidance of faculty mentors during the last semester will display and present their projects.
