Help SIU save energy, improve sustainability

As students, faculty and staff prepare to leave campus for the holiday break, now is a good time to take simple steps to save energy, which will help the university improve sustainability, one of the five pillars of the Imagine 2030 strategic plan.

Measures to conserve energy and associated costs include:

  • Turn off all office lights, and individual workplace lights, when your area is not being used.
  • Turn off any unused office equipment, including PCs, copiers and printers.
  • Turn off laboratory equipment not necessary for safety or ongoing research.
  • Properly shut all outside windows and doors.
  • Close window blinds.
  • Report any heating or cooling systems that are malfunctioning or operating unnecessarily by emailing facilities.siu.edu.
  • Set thermostats to 55 degrees.

Unplug unused appliances:

  • Space heaters.
  • Anything with a clock or timer such as coffee pots and microwaves.
  • Please empty, clean, defrost and leave the door open.

These measures will help SIU Carbondale reach its Imagine 2030 goal “to become known as a forward-thinking, environmentally responsible university that embraces sustainability, reduces its carbon footprint, pursues conscientious energy efficiencies, and creates new innovative practices to become a leader in sustainability within the state and higher education community at large.”
