SIU’s Paul Simon Institute hosts national security expert Dec. 12
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Carla Martínez Machain, a political science professor at the University of Buffalo and a leading authority on the American military, will join Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on Thursday, Dec. 12, for a virtual discussion on the power and pervasiveness of the nation’s military.
Martínez Machain will speak with John Shaw, institute director, about the U.S. Department of Defense’s wide-ranging reach and its impact in such areas as diplomacy and human rights. They will also discuss her teaching and writing about military affairs for both scholarly and general audiences.
The discussion, via Zoom at 10 a.m., is free and open to the public, but registration to view the conversation is required. The discussion is part of the institute’s “Understanding Our New World” discussion series. Visit paulsimoninstitute.org/events to register.
“Professor Martínez Machain is a national security studies triple threat: She is an inspiring teacher, rigorous scholar and compelling storyteller about military issues,” Shaw said. “Her insights on the power and pervasiveness of the American military are important for all of us to hear and to understand.”
A native of Mexico, Martínez Machain has an undergraduate degree in economics and political science from Rice University, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees from Rice. She was a professor of political science at Kansas State University before coming to the University of Buffalo in 2022.
Martínez Machain is an expert on military policy, international conflict and civil-military relations. Her research has been funded by the Department of Defense’s Minerva Initiative and the Army Research Office.
Her 2022 book, “Beyond the Wire: U.S. Military Deployments and Host Country Public Opinion,” published by Oxford University Press, “studies how U.S. military deployments abroad serve as a tool of public diplomacy that can both support and undermine the international liberal order established by the United States.”
Martínez Machain has also written for policy-oriented outlets such as the Washington Post’s Monkey Cage blog and The Conversation.
Attendees are encouraged to submit questions for Martínez Machain on the registration form or email questions to paulsimoninstitute@siu.edu.
