Irish artist Sophie Longwill to present talk at SIU Nov. 19
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Award-winning multidisciplinary Irish artist Sophie Longwill will present an artist talk on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.
Longwill’s exhibition “FAOISEAMH” will be on display Monday through Friday, Nov. 18-22, in the Vergette Gallery in the Allyn Building on campus, 1100 Normal Ave. Gallery hours are weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Longwill’s lecture, which is free and open to the public, is at 5 p.m. in Allyn Building, Room 112. A reception is from 4-6 p.m.
Longwill is completing her fall 2024 residency in SIU’s glass program. She came to SIU as an exchange student in spring 2015 while she was studying at NCAD in Dublin, Ireland. During her residency, she has been working with a variety of glass techniques, kilnworking, glassblowing and lampworking, said Jiyong Lee, professor and head of the glass program in the School of Art and Design.
Longwill’s work has been selected for international and national exhibitions, including upcoming shows “The British Glass Biennale” in Stourbridge, United Kingdom, and “Evolution at the Glass Arts Society Conference” in Berlin. Her work is in permanent collections in Ireland, the Czech Republic and Bulgaria.
Longwill earned a joint major bachelor’s degree in glass and history of art and design from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin in 2016. She earned a Master of Arts in ceramics and glass from Royal College of Art in London in August 2024.
Longwill served as a board member for the Glass Society of Ireland for five years and founded her company, Longwill Studio, in 2019.
