FEM crews spend summer improving campus facilities

Over the summer, crews from Facilities and Energy Management improved SIU Carbondale buildings and conducted utility and infrastructure maintenance.

“These projects demonstrate our commitment to continuous improvement and sustainability across the campus,” said FEM Director Mark Owens. “While some of these projects, such as water line repairs, may not be visible, they are crucial to ensuring the smooth and reliable operation of campus facilities.”

Below is a partial list of summer projects:

  • Life Science Lab renovation: Major renovations to Lab 305 in the Neckers Building are almost complete.
  • Engineering Building D: Installation of HVAC controllers and sensors throughout building to enhance climate control and energy efficiency.
  • Neckers/Engineering crosswalk: Improvements for increased accessibility.
  • Glenn Poshard Transportation Education Center: Replacement of HVAC boiler units to address premature failure of original units.
  • Beef Center on University Farms: Building renovations are almost complete for improving functionality, safety and facility conditions.
  • Lawson Hall: LED lighting upgrade is complete in all the classrooms and auditoriums for improved energy efficiency.
  • Lesar Law Building: Updated signage for renaming Simmons Law School and continuing to upgrade lighting in building to LED.
  • Faner Hall A: Renovations to vacant offices and LED lighting upgrades.
  • Pulliam Hall: Renovations and modernization of workspace for STEM and other office relocations.
  • Davies Hall: Installation of a new generator for backup power is almost complete.
  • Dunn-Richmond: Carpet replacement and office updates in various locations.
  • McLafferty Annex Building: Significant work completed to support BioLaunch programs and planning for the iFERM hub.
  • Touch of Nature: Roof replacements and various renovations for cabins on Oikos Road.
  • Evergreen Terrace: Ongoing siding and gutter replacement to several buildings.
  • Wall and Grand Apartments: Design and installation of a new camera system.
  • Lentz Dining: Kitchen equipment updates.
  • Bowyer Hall: Roof replacement for entire building.
  • Bailey and Steagall Hall: Replacement of hallway window and doors.
  • Parking lots: Continuing exterior LED lighting upgrades in various lots.
  • Power plant: Overhauled turbine generator for power plant and replaced chiller for power plant building while incorporating efficient energy equipment.
  • Pulliam Hall: Received mechanical repairs and upgrades to HVAC system for the building.
  • Utility and infrastructure projects: Repair and replacement of water lines and steam lines around campus.
