SIU’s Belleville Research Center hosts Ag Field Day July 11

CARBONDALE, Ill. – Southern Illinois University Carbondale this week will host an agriculture event in Belleville aimed at farmers while opening the world of farming to the public.

The university’s 57th annual Ag Field Day is set for Thursday, July 11, at SIU’s Belleville Research Center. The event is free and open to the public and will continue rain or shine. No corresponding event in Carbondale is scheduled this year.

Organizers expect around 200 people will attend. Pre-registration is not required.

Sponsored by the SIU College of Agricultural, Life, and Physical Sciences, the event begins with a welcome address at 8:30 a.m. at the research center, located at 2036 Charles Lane, near Scott Air Force Base.

The program, which begins at 9 a.m., will feature speakers on topics including corn and soybean trends, weed control and herbicide programs, and cover crops, among others. A representative from the Illinois Farm Bureau also will be on hand to provide an update on that organization’s efforts.

Lunch will be served at noon, and attendees are invited stay for additional weed science trial tours. Certified crop adviser credits are available.
