Media advisory: New teacher graduate pinning ceremony

by Christi Mathis

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The newest group of 87 graduates from Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Teacher Education Programs will be recognized during a special pinning ceremony at 5 p.m. May 8 at Shryock Auditorium.

Graduates from across campus who are part of the Teacher Education Program (TEP), as well as the program at the Rend Lake Marketplace campus, will be honored during this final milestone on the pathway to becoming professional educators. Future teachers completing their TEP through SIU at the University Center of Lake County (UCLC) will host their own ceremony at 1 p.m. May 5 in the Multipurpose Room at University Center with a reception to follow.

After obtaining three semesters of practical experience, the teacher candidates devote their final semester to full-time student teaching, serving in more than 60 schools located all over the region. They will receive their pins, marking the end of their SIU undergraduate experiences, from the mentor teachers they’ve served alongside in classrooms this spring. A reception will be held after the ceremony for the teacher candidates, guests, clinical educators and mentor teachers who supervised the SIU students.

Reporters, photographers and news crews are invited to cover the event. If you plan to attend, or need more information, contact the TEP office at tep@siu.edu.
