Marc Morris chosen as dean of SIU’s College of Business and Analytics
CARBONDALE, Ill. — Marc E. Morris, a triple alumnus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale has been selected as dean of the College of Business and Analytics. He has been serving as the interim dean since January 2023 and is a longtime SIU faculty member and administrator.
Sheryl A. Tucker, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs, said faculty and staff who worked with Morris and people who met with him appreciated his long service to SIU.
“Dr. Morris has extensive knowledge of SIU Carbondale and how it works, which will be an asset as he takes our College of Business and Analytics to the next level,” she said.
“I would like to thank the search committee, chaired by Bob Morgan, dean of the College of Health and Human Sciences, and the campus and local communities for their active participation in the search process. Everyone’s time and effort are greatly appreciated.”
Longstanding SIU connection
Morris, a Carbondale native, earned his bachelor’s degree in university studies with an emphasis on business administration at SIU as well as his Master of Business Administration in finance and a doctoral degree in accounting. He also holds a law degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
He joined the SIU faculty in 2004 as an instructor and by 2008 was an assistant professor of accounting with a cross appointment to Simmons Law School. Morris was promoted to associate professor in 2016 and was appointed interim director of the School of Accountancy in 2018. He became permanent director the following year and was promoted again in 2021 to professor. He served as interim associate provost for academic administration from 2021 to 2022 and co-acting provost in 2023.
Morris was the 2022 recipient of the SIU Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor presented by the SIU Alumni Association.
“Growing up on the northeast side of Carbondale, I never dreamed of becoming dean of the College of Business and Analytics,” Morris said. “It is truly an honor and responsibility that I deeply cherish. I have always had a sincere desire to do the right thing and am moved by helping people be the most outstanding that they can be. As dean, I will continue to strive for ways to encourage, support and recognize excellence in others.”
Morris has taught a diverse selection of courses at SIU, including undergraduate and graduate courses on corporate taxation; partnership taxation; governmental and nonprofit accounting; business associations; corporations, agency and partnership law; corporate finance, and law and accounting.
He has served on various committees and task forces, including graduate council chair, research task force chair and member of the Chancellor’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and Chancellor’s Leadership Council. Morris has been engaged in community service as well, including serving on the boards of the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Illinois and the Eurma C. Hayes Center.
