SIU’s Paul Simon Institute hosts leading Chicago business executive

CARBONDALE, Ill. — John W. Rogers Jr., a nationally prominent and respected entrepreneur based in Chicago, will visit Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Paul Simon Public Policy Institute on Thursday, April 11, to discuss his path-breaking career in business, public service and philanthropy.

Rogers will join John Shaw, institute director, for a “fireside conversation” to reflect on Rogers’ remarkable career, the history and mission of his firm, Ariel Investments, and the lessons he has learned from his active participation in business and public service. The conversation is at 5 p.m. in the SIU School of Law Auditorium, Room 120. A reception is planned from 4 to 5 p.m. in the law school’s formal lounge. Registration to attend the lecture is not required but is recommended.

Rogers is the founder and co-CEO of Ariel Investments, which is the first Black-owned asset management firm in the United States. Ariel manages nearly $15 billion in assets.

“We are eager to hear firsthand about John Rogers’ very consequential and inspiring career,” Shaw said. “Mr. Rogers has been successful at the highest levels of the corporate world and has always found time to give back to his community. He is a pillar of the Illinois — and the American — business community.”

The conversation will consider some of the pioneering concepts that undergird Ariel Investments, including active patience, independent thinking, focused expertise and bold teamwork.

“We are also eager to learn what suggestions John has for SIU students who are preparing for their own professional careers,” Shaw added.

Rogers is from Hyde Park and graduated from Princeton University. He founded Ariel Investments in 1983, just three years after graduating from college.

Attendees are encouraged to submit questions for Rogers on the registration form or email questions to paulsimoninstitute@siu.edu.
