SIU creation among winners in Lazy Dog Beer Club ‘Battle of the Brews’
A beer created by the SIU Carbondale Fermentation Sciences Institute is the only collegiate winner among four victors in a “Battle of the Brews,” a competition sponsored by Lazy Dog Beer Club to celebrate its fifth anniversary.
This release, the club’s 20th, is already sold out. Beer selections were voted on by Lazy Dog Beer Club and eClub members, who had the chance to vote on a selection of beverages included in past kits.
“What makes this release special is that it was voted for by our members and guests,” said Susana Carranza, vice president of marketing and commercial strategy for Lazy Dog. “We can’t wait for our members to enjoy and celebrate five years of Lazy Dog Beer Club.”
SIU’s brew, Time Traveler, a dry-hopped Belgian ale, was part of release No. 15, a competition of university teams with the theme “Mad Science.” Time Traveler pairs Belgian super yeasts from the fifth century with New Zealand Nelson Sauvin hops from the 21st century. The combination of pilsner and biscuit malts with corn sugar and dry hopping creates a light, biscuity malt flavor with a fruity aroma. The can artwork portrays a time traveler embarking on his next adventure with his trusty time machine.
The team that worked on Time Traveler included students, faculty, staff and one graduate of the fermentation science program.
“The results of this competition are about more than our students’ ability to produce a great beer,” said Matt McCarroll, FSI director. “That our team competed with professional breweries and was chosen as a favorite speaks highly of the education and real-world experience SIU Carbondale offers.”
