Students and advisors from Texas visit campus
SIU Carbondale recently gave students and advisors from Texas an up-close look at campus and what it has to offer.
Late last week, about 20 students from Lone Star College, which serves the North Houston metro area, and Malcom X College, part of City Colleges of Chicago, learned about Saluki Step Ahead, through which they can earn their bachelor’s degrees online in select programs after they complete their associate degrees, as well as on-campus options. They met with professionals from Admissions, learned about academics, toured campus, got a taste of campus life and enjoyed Saturday’s Saluki football game.
This week, a total of 21 visitors represented three organizations:
- 15 advisors (including three administrators) from Education is Freedom, a Dallas-based nonprofit that provides renewable scholarships to first-time college students, a program to improve the college-going culture in school districts and internships.
- Five GEAR UP coordinators from Austin, Houston and San Antonio, an initiative to increase early college awareness, readiness and success for low-income and historically underrepresented students in seventh grade through the first year of college.
- The dean of the School of Creative Arts, Entertainment and Design from Dallas College, which recently joined Saluki Step Ahead. In addition, the agreement between SIU Carbondale and Dallas College will offer transfer scholarships for Dallas College students who transfer to SIU Carbondale outside of programs within Saluki Step Ahead and attend the university in person.
The visitors toured campus, enjoyed a men’s basketball game and learned about distinctive facilities and program, including the Glenn Poshard Transportation Education Center, Fermentation Science Institute, Cannabis Science Center, health sciences, business programs and online education.
