Research Discovery Workshop series launches Wednesday

by Tim Crosby

A new series of workshops for SIU Carbondale faculty starting Wednesday, Nov. 1, will help attendees learn about their colleagues’ work, leading to potential collaborations.

The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research is sponsoring the Research Discovery Workshop series. All faculty are encouraged to attend the daylong workshops, which will feature a series of short presentations from a variety of faculty based on a central topic, as well as poster presentations. Faculty also may invite their graduate students, but only faculty are invited to give presentations.

Faculty should register for the event on D2L by going to Research Discovery Workshop 2023>Assessment>Surveys.

The first such event, set for this week in the Student Center Ballrooms, focuses on climate and the environment. Topics include sustainability, environmental justice, clean and sustainable energy, resilience to climate hazards, air pollution controls, wastewater and sanitation, sustainable food supply, reduction of food and water waste, reduction of climate change, adapting to climate change, resilient infrastructure, emerging technologies, measurement and impact assessment, social and community impact, diversity and inclusion, policy, and data science and analytics. Other topics also will be considered.

The event begins with a continental breakfast and poster setup time from 8 to 8:45 a.m. Five-minute presentations will run 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., followed by poster presentations 10:30 a.m. to noon.

After a light lunch, a second round of five-minute presentations will run 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by additional poster presentations until 4 p.m. A networking social hour with hors d'oeuvres and drinks is set for 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.
