How to stay safe in extreme heat

by Dr. Andrew Riffey

Medical Chief of Staff, Student Health Services

With the extreme heat and high humidity levels, it is important that we know how to prevent heat related illnesses and what to do if we are not feeling well.

Some symptoms of heat exhaustion include headache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, fatigue and extreme thirst. Some people may also develop muscle cramps or muscle pains and others may stop sweating, even in the extreme heat.

Some important tips to help prevent heat related illnesses are:

  • Try not to be too active when there is extreme heat or humidity.
  • Take frequent breaks when exercising or working outdoors.
  • Drink plenty of fluids, such as water or sports drinks, to help keep you hydrated.
    • Sodas, juices and energy drinks are not beneficial.
  • Wear loose, lightweight clothing, and don’t wear too many layers.
  • DO NOT sit in a hot car for extended periods of time.

If you are feeling overheated, here are some things you can do.

  • Spray yourself with cool water and sit in front of a fan.
  • Move to a shaded area or go into an air-conditioned building.
  • Take a cool shower or bath.
  • Drink water or sports drink. DO NOT have a drink with alcohol or caffeine.
  • Remove extra clothing, if possible.
  • Put a cold pack or cool cloth on your neck, armpits and groin.
  • Seek medical attention if you are experiencing symptoms of heat exhaustion.

Students who feel unwell after exposure to the heat should call the SIU's Department of Public Safety (DPS) at 618-453-3771 for transportation to Student Health Services to be evaluated. If faculty or staff have a student who is having signs or symptoms of a heat related illness, they should contact SIU DPS and inform Student Health by phone at 618-453-3311 or email at shcinfo@siu.edu.
