SIU hosts national crime and place conference
This week, the criminology and criminal justice program hosted the Crime and Place Summer Institute for seven distinguished scholars from throughout the world and 22 doctoral students from 15 universities.
Crime and place, a branch of criminology, focuses on how the geographic or physical characteristics of a place can make that location more susceptible to criminal activity. Attendees met at Morris Library to discuss methodology and the research on crime in particular locations as well as applications for law enforcement and communities.
The conference was organized by Julie Hibdon, associate professor in the School of Justice and Public Safety. An endowed fund established by former SIU Professor Elmer Johnson and support from both the College of Health and Human Sciences and the Vice Chancellor for Research covered meals and lodging for all participants and travel for facilitators.
