SIU School of Music presenting faculty-student ensemble next week

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Southern Illinois University Carbondale School of Music will present a faculty-student chamber music ensemble next week.

The faculty-student Versa’tile Chamber Ensemble, under the auspices of the Southern Illinois Chamber Music Society, will perform Wednesday, May 10, at the Carbondale Unitarian Fellowship, 105 N. Parrish Lane. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. The program is free and open to the public.

William Cernota and Joe Bauer, assistant lecturers, and Rossana Cauti, a lecturer in the School of Music, established Versa'tile in October 2021. Other Versa’tile members are Feliciti McKellar, Vladislav Petrachev, graduate master’s students, music, and Liaht Bauer, graduate master’s student, physician assistant studies.

Other School of Music faculty who will perform include Michael Barta, professor; Jessica Butler, associate professor of practice; David Dillard, associate professor; Yuko Kato, associate professor, and Isaac Lausell, associate professor.

The repertoire is: 

  • “Sonata No. 1 in D Minor” by Antonio Bertali, performed by Petrachev on sackbut, Barta and McKellar on violins and Cernota on continuo cello.
  • “Oblivion” by Astor Piazzolla and arranged by Anthony Wise, performed by Butler on trombone, Cernota on cello and Kato on piano.
  • “Per questa bella mano, K612” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, performed by Dillard on baritone, Joe Bauer string bass and Kato on piano.
  • “Kaddisch from Deux Mélodies Hébraïques” by Maurice Ravel, performed by Butler on trombone and Kato on piano.
  • “Chant du Menestrel (Song of the Minnesinger), Op. 71” by Alexander Glazunov, performed by Cernota on cello and Kato on piano.
  • “From Abruzzese Etudes for Guitar” by Isaac Lausell, performed by Lausell on guitar.
  • “Quintet for Strings: Leaves of an Unwritten Diary” by Krzysztof Penderecki, performed by Barta and Liaht Bauer on violins, Cauti on viola, Cernota on cello and Joe Bauer on string bass.
